The Times-Picayune, a Pulitzer-Prize winning, multi-platform news organization, is seeking an ambitious reporter to cover the criminal justice system in New Orleans, including the courts, Sheriff’s Office and the jail. We’re looking for a veteran journalist who can produce daily stories – both for online and print -- as well as thoughtful, deeply-researched enterprise coverage. The job includes occasional coverage of the federal, civil and appeals courts as well as topics that explore the American legal system, including incarceration and the fair administration of justice. The ideal candidate would produce lively, informative stories that bring to life the impacts of the criminal justice system in ways that readers can easily understand. Strong reporting skills are a must, as is a distinctive writing voice. We’re in a competitive market, so breaking and owning stories is very important to us – and must also be important to you.

The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate is a 7-day, home-delivered newspaper with local owners and a veteran staff, many of whom have covered the Crescent City for years. We are passionate about producing thoughtful, complex journalism both in print and on our website NOLA.com, and have been aggressive about growing the organization to reach more digital subscribers. In addition to the New Orleans products, our company publishes The Advocate in Baton Rouge and The Acadiana Advocate in Lafayette, as well as their surging digital properties. As our criminal justice reporter, you will be responsible for the following:
-Developing sources on your beat.
-Using public records and databases to find and tell stories.
-Writing a mix of daily and enterprise stories.
-Posting stories online, with an emphasis on fast, accurate reports that grab readers and keep them coming back for more.
-Contributing to general assignment coverage as directed.
