The Journalism Program in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at Rutgers University-Newark invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin September 2022. We seek a colleague with a clear record of and commitment to journalism that advances social and racial justice as well as a strong desire to help build an innovative course of study responsive to the industry’s transformations in the digital age. We are an undergraduate program in an interdisciplinary department that also includes programs in Art, Art History, Graphic Design, Music, Theater, and Video Production as well as a graduate program in Jazz Studies. The successful applicant will teach existing courses in journalism and media studies and help develop new courses at the cutting-edge of 21st century journalism that also instill the core principles of accountability and watchdog journalism. Such courses may include engagement journalism, solutions journalism, visual and multimedia storytelling, data journalism, and investigative reporting. We seek an instructor who will guide students through the creation of storytelling projects devoted to social justice, race relations, migration, climate change and other key issues and who will bring a decolonizing lens to the endeavor. The successful applicant will also embrace an approach that treats the city of Newark and its surrounding communities as a lab for community-based and engagement journalism, not merely as a beat. These priorities and areas of focus align with the Journalism Program’s mission of furthering equity and justice for marginalized populations through the practice and study of journalism.
