Job Description

Tradeoffs is a nonprofit news organization that helps people have smarter, more honest conversations about the U.S. health care system. We produce a weekly podcast, newsletter, and digital articles that tell intellectually engaging, emotionally resonant stories, as well as live events.

Our organization follows three principles: (1) rely on research and evidence; (2) employ storytelling techniques; and (3) focus on the intersection of policy, money, and people.

Our Managing Editor will oversee the planning and production of rigorous, engaging, and impactful audio and digital journalism about health care in America. This is an opportunity to shape an ambitious and nimble nonprofit newsroom, grow our reach, and expand our impact.

The ideal candidate is passionate about producing high-quality journalism and is as excited about a compelling patient story as they are about a new piece of economic research. They value the accessibility and rigor of our style and are excited to maintain the high-quality of our work. They are energized by the work of developing talent and making systems work better. They also understand how the media landscape is evolving and are motivated to find new and innovative ways to connect with audiences.

This is a full-time, remote position. Compensation is commensurate with experience, ranging between $120,000-$140,000. The preferred start date is November 2024. This role reports to the Executive Editor and will manage our three Reporter/Producers, contract Editors, and Sound Engineers.

Applications will be accepted until September 13, 2024, but will be evaluated as they are received.

The Managing Editor will:

  • Work with the Executive Editor and Executive Director to operationalize our multi-year strategic plan to deepen our journalism and expand our reach.
  • Oversee and evaluate our cross-platform editorial strategy, thinking strategically about how to package our reporting across audio, digital, live events, and other mediums.
  • Work with the Executive Editor to set the editorial calendar, assign stories to the team, and oversee production workflow.
  • Share editing duties with the Executive Editor, including topline edits, line edits, and copy edits to audio and digital stories.
  • Collaborate closely with our audience team to identify strategies to grow our reach and maximize our impact.
  • Identify opportunities to partner with other media outlets.
  • Supervise three Reporters/Producers and guide their professional development.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Has 10+ years in a newsroom with at least 3+ years editing journalism about the U.S. health care system and has experience managing journalists. Editing a variety of story formats is preferred.
  • Thinks creatively and strategically about story formats and media platforms and how to effectively pair the two.
  • Has the ability to think deeply about journalistic projects, uphold editorial standards, and edit and coach journalists through any part of the pitching, reporting, writing, editing and production process.
  • Communicates clearly and collaborates effectively with people in a range of roles from our Executive Editor to our reporters to our marketing team.
  • Wants to play a big role in shaping a small and ambitious nonprofit news organization.
  • Has experience editing audio journalism or a strong desire to learn how to edit audio.
  • Thrives in flexible, fast-paced, growing, and remote work environments.

Don’t feel like you can check every single box above? That’s okay! If you’re passionate about this job, we want to meet you!

How to apply: Please complete our online application form, including submitting a cover letter, and resume.

Benefits: In addition to a generous base salary, we offer monthly health insurance reimbursements, 401K access, unlimited paid time off including 8 paid holidays, and paid office closure for 2 weeks each year.

Tradeoffs is committed to building an inclusive and equitable workplace. Everyone, especially those from historically marginalized groups, are encouraged to apply.
