Job Description

The School of Journalism at the University of Montana is taking applications through March 15, 2025 for the Spring 2026 T. Anthony Pollner Distinguished Professorship.

The focus of the spring semester professorship can be in any of the following specializations: visual journalism, audio journalism, online journalism, documentary, database reporting and infographics, design, management, business, other. We’re looking for something other than writing for print publications which is the focus of the Fall professorships.

Applicants should have a national reputation in journalism and a keen interest in mentoring aspiring journalists. The successful candidate will pitch and teach a course relating to his/her/their specialization; co-advise staff of the Montana Kaimin, UM’s independent student newsroom; and give a workshop on campus during the school’s annual High School Journalism Day.

Recent Pollner professors include the former editor-in-chief of National Geographic, a Pulitzer-prize winning feature photographer; a national data journalist; and an award-winning audio journalist.

The stipend is $42,000 and housing is provided. This is not a remote position and the successful candidate will be expected to live and spend the vast majority of their time in Missoula, Montana, from Jan. 12 - May 9, 2026.

PLEASE APPLY ELECTRONICALLY. DO NOT APPLY UNLESS YOU ARE ABLE TO ACCEPT AN OFFER FROM THE SELECTION COMMITTEE.

Please submit a letter of interest and include a thoughtful proposal for a course, a resume, three references with contact information and links to professional work to journalismpollner@mso.umt.edu. You may direct any questions to that email address as well.

Please indicate in the email subject line that you are applying for the Spring 2026 professorship.

The University of Montana is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer and has a strong institutional commitment to the principle of diversity in all areas. In that spirit, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of qualified people who would assist the University in demonstrating its essential values of leadership, diversity, engagement and sustainability.

This position is eligible for veterans' preference in accordance with Montana State Law.
