Job Description

RAND’s Office of Communications and External Affairs has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic communications professional who is looking to use their expertise and skills to support RAND’s mission of helping improve policy and decisionmaking through research and analysis. 

In this role, you will create and implement engaging internal communications campaigns that inform and inspire our workforce about strategic priorities and critical initiatives. As a crucial part of the Internal Communications team within the Communications and External Affairs department, you will report to the Manager, Internal Communications. Your responsibilities will include helping drive our executive communications strategy and supporting core internal communications functions such as newsletters and events. You will partner with other teams such as Human Resources, Information Services, and RANDs research departments to strengthen their communications to staff.

This role’s responsibilities include

  • designing and implementing communications strategies that effectively inform and engage employees

  • developing, editing, and producing content for executive leadership communications across various channels including the intranet, email campaigns, presentations, posters, signage, roadshows, employee online collaboration spaces like Viva Engage, and video

  • managing, reviewing, and updating intranet content as needed to support both operational needs and special projects

  • serving as writer, editor, and production support for standard internal communications tactics including RAND’s employee newsletter, RAND Items.

  • in partnership with the Manager, Internal Communications, providing strategic counsel to RAND staff including Human Resources, research divisions, and other organizational groups on communications best practices for both routine and special projects, such as diversity, equity, and inclusion; employee onboarding; employee wellness; and benefits.

Job Requirements

Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess

  • Superior writing and editing skills with a strong command of voice and tone; ability to engage a highly educated and sophisticated audience utilizing multiple channels including web, social media, email, and employee marketing

  • Demonstrated understanding of how to communicate information in a clear, concise, and compelling manner, prioritizing the audience’s needs

  • Proven ability to be attuned to issues of business operations, corporate culture, employee engagement, change management, organizational development, and continuous improvement

  • Knowledge, interest, or experience in integrating diversity and inclusion principles into employee communications

  • A digital orientation and tech-savviness, including a working understanding of HTML and web design, and experience with web writing and generating content for and driving engagement via communication and collaboration tools such as corporate intranets, Viva Engage, or Slack

  • Strong organizational time management and project management skills; be capable of creating project plans and driving oneself and others to meet deadlines

  • Flexibility and creativity to embrace new ideas and feedback

  • Proven proficiency in cloud-based applications (Asana, Trello) and eager to learn new collaboration and organization platforms such as SharePoint, Teams, Planner, etc.

Education Requirements  

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or related discipline; advanced degree advantageous. 

Experience  

A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in employee communications.  Experience working within a mid-size to large corporate or non-profit setting is preferred. 

Location  

This position will be located at one of the following RAND offices: Arlington, Virginia; Boston, Massachusetts; Pittsburgh Pennsylvania; or Santa Monica, California. This position is eligible for RAND’s hybrid work environment, which enables a blend of on-site and remote work. Some on-site presence will be required to meet business needs, including on an ad-hoc basis; onsite needs will vary from month to month.

Writing Sample Required  

Candidates are required to submit samples of their work that demonstrate their writing skills and ability to create internal communication products.

Writing samples should include at least one example of messaging created for an executive's voice (e.g., email, remarks, memo, etc.) and any other samples which may include email campaigns, intranet or web copy, corporate social media content, or PowerPoint presentations.

Salary Range:  $82,100 - $122,100

RAND considers a variety of factors when formulating an offer, including, but not limited to, the specific role and associated responsibilities; a candidate’s work experience, education/training, skills, and expertise; and internal equity.
