About you:

You’re a professional who has worked in global development AND communications/journalism. You’re excited to take your experience and expertise in global development and bring it to a wider audience through Devex.

You know how the global development industry works — who funds projects, how proposals get written, and what it takes to successfully fundraise. You also can write, edit, and speak on these topics. You’re eager to dig into a beat, find out what insiders are talking about, and bring those compelling stories to our audience of development professionals. You’re equally comfortable producing stories based on conversations with experts, reviewing RFPs, and studying grant databases.

You’ll thrive in an environment where you’re supported by a team of experienced journalists who will support you in working with freelancers and writing your own pieces.

About the job:

• We’re looking for a global development professional who also has enough communications or journalism experience that they can bring their expertise to a wider audience through Devex. You’ll be responsible for writing your own blogs and newsletters, commissioning content from freelance journalists, and hosting webinars and events focused on how organizations in international aid get funded.
• You’ll be writing for our subscribers: an audience of business development professionals and other executives working for NGOs, development consultancies, humanitarian aid organizations, and more. And you’ll be producing content that helps them make smart decisions and get ahead in their day-to-day work.
• You’ll be talking to leaders at foundations and donor agencies — learning more about what they’re looking for, what makes them tick, as well as looking at the documents and data released by those institutions, and using it to analyze key trends.
• You’ll assign freelancers to profile foundation and donor leaders, write blogs about fundraising tips, and work with our data analysis team to find compelling funding trend stories and develop them in the most interesting way possible.

In your first 90 days

• You’ll meet our subscribers and understand the kind of content they need to do their jobs better. And you’ll get up to speed on the latest trends at institutions funding international development.
• You’ll work with the wider editorial and data analysis teams to understand the existing work we do, and to map out new ideas. You’ll reach out to potential partners such as think tanks, civil society and current and former officials, and you’ll study trends and information.
• You’ll also develop a good understanding of your role within the wider Devex news team and work on stories collaboratively with other reporters, the production and multimedia team, and the engagement team.
• You’ll build contacts with key individuals working in the world of development funding, conduct interviews, and work on building a program of exclusive insights.

By the end of your first year, you’ll be on your way to becoming a respected voice in the sector, having cultivated sources in order to write exclusive stories, based on data, tips and information gleaned from your past coverage.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications

• Here are the basic requirements we’re looking for in the role…
• At least 5 years experience in global development
• Some communications and/or journalism experience
• Strong writing skills

• A passion for global development and a knowledge of its institutions
• Experience in or around business development/fundraising in the global development industry
• Fluency in accessing and analyzing funding information, from RFPs to donor databases
• People management experience
• Familiarity with moderating panels and webinars
