Job Description:

The Department of Journalism at Loyola Marymount University seeks an assistant or associate professor to fill a tenure-track position in Journalism to begin in Fall 2025. An advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Journalism, Media Studies or a closely related field is required. The ideal candidate has a record of scholarly publication and/or authorship of film/video/audio/digital projects in addition to experience in and critical knowledge of the technology and content of multiple media. Experience with or interest in digital pedagogies or integrating technology in teaching in ways that enhance student learning would be considered an asset. Expertise in covering communities traditionally underserved by media in general, and a concern for ethical issues that confront journalists in the digital era are expected. https://academics.lmu.edu/joinourfaculty/

The teaching load is two or three 4-unit courses per semester (a cycle of 2-2-2-3 over two years), including Core and Journalism courses in reporting, writing, digital media production, ethics and/or history of the genre. LMU values the teacher-scholar-practitioner educator model and offers a pre-tenure sabbatical and opportunities to apply for research funding and to hire undergraduate research assistants. Interest in and valuing the University’s mission, citizenship and engagement are important for faculty at LMU.

As part of an intercultural, student-centered institution, we promote teaching diverse course content using inclusive and critical pedagogies. Candidates should have an interest in helping students develop as local and global citizens through, for example, experiential learning assignments, community-engagement, and/or immersion experiences that highlight the borders and intersections among communities.

Founded in 1911, Loyola Marymount University is a Carnegie classified R2 institution rooted in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions. We are committed to fostering an academic community enriched by difference and opportunities for intellectual engagement and real-world experience. We enroll an academically ambitious, multicultural, and socioeconomically varied student body. We recruit, retain and support a diverse faculty committed to excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and creativity. Our three campuses are rooted in the heart of Los Angeles, a global capital for arts and entertainment, innovation and technology, business and entrepreneurship.

LMU is a unique and rewarding place to work. As you consider your employment opportunities with our institution, we encourage you to take the time to learn about the university community and how it distinguishes us from other places of employment. We are proud of the programs, benefits and services we provide our community. We strive to ensure an inclusive environment in all aspects of campus life that fosters a strong sense of trust and mutual respect.

Applications will only be accepted electronically and must be submitted through the LMU Job Portal. Please apply online by submitting a single PDF that includes 1.) a cover letter that describes your journalism experience and your thoughts on the future of journalism education, 2.) a curriculum vitae or resume, 3.) a statement of teaching philosophy that includes an explanation of how your classroom approach addresses issues around equity and 4.) 5-10 samples of your work (or hyperlinks). Additional materials may be requested at later stages in the application process including: letters of recommendation, official transcripts and (if applicable) teaching materials such as sample syllabi and lesson plans. Questions may be directed to Journalism Chair Prof. Rubén Martínez at ruben.martinez@lmu.edu.
