KODIAK, ALASKA REPORTER / SENIOR REPORTER POSITION
Public Radio KMXT-FM seeks a full-time REPORTER or SENIOR REPORTER (depending on experience) to join our award-winning news team.
The Reporter/Senior Reporter is a general assignment journalist who helps KMXT provide daily, local coverage for Kodiak Island and the Alaska Public Radio Network. This position is ideal for someone who cares deeply about rural and coastal communities, local government, and fisheries, and who wants to grow as a radio journalist.
Gather, write, produce, edit, and voice news for local and regional broadcast, including assigned stories and regular beats.
Work under tight deadlines while juggling multiple stories and weekly tasks.
Host daily news broadcasts, special events, and live news coverage, including on-air board shifts as assigned.
Develop and maintain strong news sources and community contacts.
Uphold high standards of professionalism, accuracy, and journalism ethics.
Be a collaborative team member and share in regular station maintenance tasks with staff.
Demonstrate interest in local government, rural/remote Alaska, and fisheries reporting.
Produce an average of three spot stories per week and about one feature story per month for broadcast.
Show interest in and willingness to learn alternative and emerging modes of news distribution, such as podcasting and social media.
Additional Expectations for Senior Reporter
Candidates hired at the Senior Reporter level will also be expected to:
Take the lead on more complex, enterprise, or investigative stories.
Help shape coverage priorities in coordination with the News Director and Community Advisory Board
Assist with producing and occasionally hosting public affairs programs, such as KMXT’s “Talk of the Rock.”
Mentor less experienced staff, interns, or volunteers as needed.
Contribute local reporting regularly to statewide and national outlets when opportunities arise.
KMXT’s news department reports and produces local news daily, contributes to the Alaska Public Radio Network, and produces the Alaska Fisheries Report, distributed statewide. In the past year, KMXT news stories have been featured on NPR national news and National Native News.
KMXT is located on Kodiak Island, a beautiful, remote island about 250 miles south of Anchorage. Kodiak is a major commercial fishing hub and consistently ranks among the top five fishing ports in the U.S. The community is incredibly diverse: it is the ancestral homeland of the Alutiiq people and includes large Filipino and Latino communities, with more than 14 languages spoken locally. The City of Kodiak, one of eight communities on the island, is home to about half of Kodiak’s 13,000 residents.
This is a full-time, non-exempt position, in-person (not remote) with benefits.
Reporter: Level 8 on KPBC Pay Grid. Starting wage approximately $23/hour DOE.
Senior Reporter: Level 12 on the KPBC Pay Grid. Starting wage approximately $27/hour DOE.

Reporter (entry to mid-level):
College degree preferred, with some broadcast journalism or equivalent reporting experience.
Computer and internet literate, with demonstrated ability to learn and use broadcast and production equipment.
Excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills.
Experience with audio equipment and Adobe Audition preferred.
Senior Reporter (experienced):
All of the above, plus:
Three or more years of professional journalism experience (public media experience a plus).
Demonstrated ability to develop local reporting beats, produce enterprise features, and work independently while meeting deadlines.
Proven record of ethical, accurate, and community-minded reporting.
