Job Description: The Assembly Majority Office is seeking to hire a Communications Manager to lead the development and execution of comprehensive and individualized communications strategies for the local district offices of Democratic Assembly members, promoting the members’ legislation, initiatives, and community engagement efforts. Working closely with the Assembly Majority Office’s Executive Director and Director of Communications, the Communications Manager will oversee a team of communications associates working in local district offices, providing editorial direction and scheduling, and will collaborate with the Chiefs of Staff in district offices. The position leads efforts to maintain and enhance the Assembly members’ public profile, and requires expertise in public engagement, media relations, and digital communications. The Manager will mentor and provide direction to communications associates to ensure messaging highlights the work of the Assembly members, and addresses local community needs and concerns. This position will oversee the creation and management of written and video content for social media platforms, as well as newsletters, press releases, speeches, talking points and other materials. All outgoing communications must be edited to ensure accuracy and consistent public messaging. The Manger will work to develop unique and non-traditional opportunities for messaging, including list building in district offices in order to reach constituents directly. The Manager must be able to build strong relationships with Assembly members, local district staff, and the media, and work closely with the Assembly Majority Office communications team. The Manager must be available to work outside of regular business hours, as needed. Being flexible and adaptable are key to achieving success in this role. Daily responsibilities include:
Collaborating with the AMO Communications Director and District Office Chiefs of Staff.
Developing schedules and assignments for communications associates.
Creating opportunities to highlight the work of Assembly members.
Assisting in content development and finalizing materials for distribution.
Implementing digital media strategies and non-traditional messaging opportunities.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public policy, political science or a related field.
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in a leadership role in communications, or in a government, nonprofit or advocacy setting.
Experience supervising a staff and fostering a collaborative team environment.
Strong understanding of the legislative process and community engagement strategies.
Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communications skills. Proficiency in social media platforms.
Proven record of building brands and increasing social media followers.
Able to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, with excellent organizational and time management skills. Must be flexible and able to pivot as needed.
Previous legislative district office or campaign experience is a plus.
Bilingual capabilities are a plus.
Residency Law: All persons newly hired have one year to establish residency in New Jersey, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L 2011, Chapter 70).
